In Memoriam

Charlie O’Donnell

I think it is fair to say that all the members of the club are still in a state of disbelief that our respected Chairman and friend Charlie, has passed away. Following a very short, sudden and  aggressive illness, Charlie passed away on 16th October 2016.

It says a lot about the character of the man that around two hundred people were present at his funeral at Markeaton Crematorium to pay their respects to him and offer their support to his family. The service was very moving and a lovely tribute to him. A further tribute will be posted in due course with the permission of his family.

Rest in Peace, Charlie

Barry Newson

I would like to place on record the sadness felt throughout the club following the recent passing of our friend and member of many years standing Barry Newson.

When I first joined Derby Model Boat Club it was easy to spot the people who made the club thrive. Barry always attended club with his loving wife and fellow member Jean. They stood out as a couple to me as people who wanted the club to succeed and made sure it did by always being willing at any events. Arriving early to help set up  on Regatta days and  taking on the role of head of parking at Belper well dressing weekend along with ensuring the club was always well represented at Elvaston and Long Eaton steam rallies.

Barry was poorly for several years but it never got in the way of “boat club” and he would even attend on his mobility scooter.

He was a good friend to many and always happy to help and share his knowledge. A memory I will always have is of Barry expressing his dislike of the speed merchants sailing among the scale boats by hollering “FAST BOATS DOWN THE BOTTOM END!”

Rest in Peace Barry, and know that Jean remains part of the Boat Club family.
