About Us....

Derby Model Boat Club is a a friendly and informal group of model boat enthusiasts. The club has been active in Derby since 1976 and recently celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2016.

Sailing usually takes place on the Mundy Play Area canoe pond within Markeaton Park, which is accessed from the public car park on Markeaton Lane. Whilst access to the pond is available at all times, members meet to sail on Wednesdays at the following times:

Wednesday Mornings from 10.00 am

and

Alternate weekends by prior arrangement

During winter months should the Mundy Pool become frozen, we still have access to waters adjacent to Markeaton Park Craft Village for members meaning we can sail all year round.

With the exception of both steam and internal combustion engine powered models (which are not allowed on the pond) members operate all types of model boats e.g. Ready-to-Sail, Almost-Ready-to-Sail, Kit and Scratch Built models. The types of model boat operated includes: cargo ships, fishing boats, tug boats, lifeboats, warships, speedboats, yachts, submarines and novelty craft.

Most of our models are electric/battery powered models. Internal combustion is not allowed however steam powered vessels are welcome providing they have a valid current boiler safety certificate.

We are a small but friendly club with a variety of members; from complete novices to seasoned modellers. Absolute beginners are always welcome to come along and sail with us. Any person under 18 must have parent/guardian to accompany them at weekly sailings.

In addition to weekly sailing we have a full day Summer Regatta in June and a Venetian Evening sail and fish and chip supper in September.

Members met yearly in November for an Annual General Meeting when members elect the Committee responsible for conducting the Club’s affairs for the following year. Club membership provides insurance against third party liabilities whilst operating model boats and new members are always welcome, young and old alike. Children are welcome with a responsible adult to accompany them.
